We made history!!!

This week we will be giving you the exclusive story of J209’s Rooftop Adventure!! And we begin on Friday, April 19th, when our band manager throws open the door and says- “GUESS WHAT? We’re performing on top of the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.”

What occurred next was a strange combination of shocked silence from some, to euphoric hat throwing from others. (Jimmy, our baritone, actually threw his hat about 10 times that day… due to various reasons- he was very excited about a LOT of things.)

Fast forward a few short weeks, the day was upon us. We arrived in SLC with hearts pitter-pattering as we rode the elevator to the top of the conference center- a place that had been banned from visitors for the last 20 years.

Sound-checking in the blazing June heat wasn’t fun for anyone, but it was so worth it- especially when we found out the impact we had.

At first, only a handful (and I mean literally a handful) of people showed up to listen. So when we gathered to pray before our performance, Jarom (our beatboxer) asked Heavenly Father that “the seats be filled with people who need to hear.” And as we performed, the words of Jarom’s prayer rang in our ears as we witnessed a miracle: the crowd went from a handful of spectators to a nearly full-to-capacity crowd of engaged audience members.

The night just got better as we talked with the audience; they were all so excited to say hello and one of them even admitted that he was a super fan!

But the best part was when a family from SPAIN came up and talked about how much they enjoyed it! According to the Spanish speakers in our group (mainly Jimmy since he actually served in Spain- NOT a coincidence), they had flown in for a family vacation (why to Utah, we’ll never know), were walking down the streets of the city, heard us performing and decided to see where the music was coming from.

So they came up to the roof and decided to stay! They continued and told us that they were very appreciative of what we were trying to do, and told us they would support us on our mission. That touched us all deeply, and when they asked to get a picture, we were more than happy to oblige, but we never got a copy from them... Regardless, the picture below perfectly depicts our joy!

This experience of making history in an unofficial re-opening of the Conference Center Rooftop was absolutely unmatched. It will be something that we’ll never forget, and we will always be grateful that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gave us this life-changing opportunity. But we were shocked to find out that it wouldn’t end there.

They ended up asking us to perform again…

This time for a conference of over 20,000 people.

Read the following blog to hear about J209’s YSA Conference Adventure! This one includes some CRAZY curveballs that caused great anxiety.

But we didn’t just get through them, we tackled them to the floor and conquered the challenges placed before us.

And we can’t wait for you to share in our victory. 😁
